Want to record what's on your computer's screen? You might be a professional who needs to record your screen for a presentation at work, a software developer making a how-to video, or someone who wants to put a helpful video clip on YouTube. There are tools built into Windows and macOS that let you record what's on your screen, and there are also many third-party apps that do the same thing. Here is how to begin.

Game Bar is a feature of Windows 10 that lets you record games you play on your PC or stream from an Xbox console. But it can just as easily record what other apps do on the screen. To set this up, go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and turn on the switch labeled "Enable Xbox Game Bar."

Here, you can also change any of the keyboard shortcuts for opening the Game Bar, taking a screenshot, or recording a video. And if you connect an Xbox Controller to your PC, you can bring up the Game Bar by pressing the Xbox button on the controller (Opens in a new window).

Go to Settings > Gaming > Captures to change the Game Bar's appearance. From here, you can change where your videos are saved by default, turn on background recording to record activity after the fact, choose to record both video and audio and change the frame rate between 30 and 60 frames per second.

Click on the Settings icon to the right of the top bar in Game Bar. Under Settings, you can look through the different categories to change the shortcuts, change the theme, change the widgets, set up background recording, and record audio along with the video.

How to make a screen recording in Windows 10

1.  Start the app that you want to record with. Unfortunately, the screen recorder tool can't record File Manager or the whole desktop, but it can record regular desktop apps (and those from the Windows Store).

How to make a screen recording in Windows 11

Using the Xbox Game Bar tool in Windows 11, you can record just about anything. However, you won't be able to record the Windows desktop or File Explorer.

 Once you're in the right app, though, you can record, take screenshots, and do other things without any restrictions.

Open the app you want to record on your PC.

To open the Xbox Game Bar tool, press the Windows key and the letter G together.

Click the "Start recording" button in the Capture menu or press Win+Alt+R. When it starts to record the video, a stop icon will show up.
