Do you know what a hard drive is? And What is its function in a laptop or a computer? If not, read this blog to learn about the proper details of HDD.
What a Hard drive is?
A computer or laptop's hard disk drive (HDD) is a hard drive or fixed disk. The hard disk drive (HDD) is a non-volatile data storage device. Non-volatile means maintaining the stored data when the computer or laptop is turned off. All computers need a storage device, and hard disk drives are just one example of a type of storage device. A hard disk is located within a drive unit on the computer's motherboard. It is installed internally in computer systems, mobile devices, consumer electronics, and enterprise storage arrays in data centers. Using magnetic disks, they can store operating systems, software programs, and other files.
What is the function of the hard disk drive?
The hard disk drive is a secondary computer or laptop storage device designed to store data permanently in the system. Secondary storage devices, such as computers or laptops, have a larger capacity than primary storage devices. The data stored in a hard disk is retained when our computer system shuts down or is turned off. The data stored in the hard disk can be of many types, such as the operating system, installed software, documents, and other computer files.
What are the Advantages of a hard drive?
Some advantages or benefits of a Hard Disk Drive are given below:
•One of the significant advantages or benefits of a Hard Disk drive is its low cost.
•Another advantage of a Hard Disk is that it is readily available.
•Hard Disk is faster as compared to optical disks.
•The data storage capacity in a computer or laptop is usually significant in HDDs.
The disadvantages or limitations of a Hard Disk Drive are given below :
•The speed of reading and writing on a hard disk is slower than RAM's.
•Hard disk drives are noisy.
•Another disadvantage of HDD is that it is energy inefficient.
•Hard disks consume more power.

The hard disk drive is mainly of three types-:
SATA was introduced in 2003; SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) is the default interface for most desktop and laptop hard drives. A single drive can range from 500 GB to 16 TB and is more readily available at a lower cost than any other drive.
· Advantages
1. Lower cost than any other drive.
2. High disk sizes.
· Disadvantages
1. Not suitable for laptops or PC
2. Requires regular defragmentation.
2. SSD (Solid state drive )
SSD stands for a solid-state drive. All of the data in SSD is stored on non-volatile flash memory.SSD drives range from about 120 GB to 2 TB and are about 2-4 times the price of a SATA hard drive of the same size.
Advantages
1. Faster than SATA
2. More durable, especially for laptops and computers
Disadvantages
1. More expensive than SATA Drive
2. Lower-size disk or drive
3. NVME (Non-Volatile Memory Express)
Non-Volatile Memory Express, or NVMe, was released in 2013. NVMe is a type of SSD attached to a PCI Express (PCIe) slot on the main board in computers and laptops. These slots were initially designed for graphics cards, so they work incredibly fast.
· Advantages
1. Fastest disk type in the market
· Disadvantages
1. Costly drive.
2. Available only for desktop PCs
3. It May require replacing the main board to get the full benefit.
